MONTE ROSA GROUP, South-East side photographed from the surroundings of Alagna Valsesia. Sesia Val Grande Geopark, Sesia Valley, Piedmont, ITALY.
On this day a levada walk was on the agenda. Due to the previous storm we could not reach the original starting point of our hike and so we had to follow the Levada Ribeira da Janela in the opposite direction and return the same way - not optimal, but of course very easy to see in terms of timing. So we first hiked uphill, which was very easy given the slight gradient of the water channels, and returned after about 3 hours and a break. As it turned out, it was a beautiful tour with some tunnels to cross and a great waterfall. But what inspired me even more was this green "hell" - you really felt like you were in the jungle - unbelievably and unbelievably beautiful.
For this image I stitched two 16mm portrait format photos together.
The park relief is mountainous and characterized by rocky formations, with altitude between 540-2791 m (1,771-9,156 ft), and at its highest point is the peak of the Black Needles (Agulhas Negras).
In Itatiaia Plateau region, also known as "Upper Part", are the high fields and hanging valleys where there are several river sources. In the Park area are the origins of 12 major regional river basins, which supply two main basins: Rio Grande (Grand River), an affluent of the Paraná River, and the Paraíba do Sul River, the most important of Rio de Janeiro.
The Big Three:
*Pico das Prateleiras ('Peak of Shelves') (2,551m / 8,369ft) in the middle left:
It is one of the most impressive and beautiful landforms in Itatiaia Park. To the southwest, there is a gigantic wall that falls towards the Paraíba valley, but forms a ridge with little difference in level to the northwest that connects with Morro do Couto. flic.kr/p/2oJ4HiZ
*Pico das Agulhas Negras ('the Black Needles Peak') (2,791.5m / 9,156ft) on the left:
It is the highest mountain in the Park and one of the highest in Brazil. Agulhas Negras stands out in the landscape and it's no wonder. flic.kr/p/2oFZq2E
*Morro do Couto ('Couto Hill') (2,680m / 8,752ft) in the middle right:
It is a mountain, even though it has “hill” in its name.
GORZENTE LAKES. There are 3 lakes, of which only 2 are visible in the image, built starting in 1880 to supply the city of Genoa with water. Image taken from Bric (Hill) Nasciu. Piedmont/Liguria, ITALY. EXPLORE 05-05-2023.
The Santa Ana Mountains as seen from the "Top of the World" - a park at the highest point in Laguna Beach. From this view it's easy to see why these two peaks are commonly referred to as Saddleback Mountain.
Sorry, the title is a clickbait, there's really no story here 😊... but, can you spot the two freight trains?
Passing through this very beautiful lake as we were heading out to Vancouver to visit some friends on this hazy day. The newly arrived train (on the other side of the lake) was an added bonus!
******************
PS: After thinking somewhat, I do have a story to tell!
See the low floating/suspending mist in the far end? That's where we traveled from: on the one-lane (each direction) Trans-Canada Hwy which did not provide a suitable pulloff. (Isn't it a sin to build a scenic road and not provide pull-offs for photo ops?!?) The scenery along the way was out of the world, more so with the floating thick mist. My desire to photograph was so strong, but yet I couldn't, so you can imagine how I felt that morning! I'm sure it's something that you can relate to!😉

"Up until the 1990s, the average freight train in Canada was about 5,000 feet (1.54 kilometres) long and weighed 7,000 tons. But it is now not uncommon to see these trains stretch to 12,000 feet, sometimes as much as 14,000 feet (more than four kilometres), weighing up to 18,000 tons."

"Kamloops Lake in British Columbia, Canada is situated on the Thompson River just west of Kamloops. The lake is 1.6 km (0.994 mile) wide, 29 km (18 mile) long, and up to 152 m (0.0944 mile) deep. In prehistoric times, the lake was much longer, perhaps 20x, with adjacent silt cliffs defining ancient lake bottoms 100 meters (328 feet) higher than present water levels."

The Royal Grand Palace is a complex of buildings at the heart of Bangkok, Thailand. The palace has been the official residence of the Kings of Siam and later Thailand since 1782. It consists of not only royal and throne halls, but also a number of government offices as well as the renowned Temple of the Emerald Buddha. It covers an area of 218,000 square metres and is surrounded by four walls, 1900 metres in length. After King Rama I ascended to the throne in 1782, the palace was built. Prior to this, the royal palace and centre of administration had been located in Thonburi, on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. For various reasons, the new King considered the former capital to be unsuitable and decided to establish a new capital on the other side of the river. Admission fee is free of charge for Thais and 500 baht for foreigners. You'll need to wear culturally appropriate attire when visiting the Grand Palace in Bangkok. This means being well covered. Visitors should wear long skirts/trousers and sleeved shirts—basically anything that covers more than the lower arms and head. Fortunately, after the covid period, it is not yet busy with tourists. Thailand has just ended their quarantine policy. Face masks are no longer mandatory. Great to visit the Grand Palace one more time now.
Impressive 200 years of royal history and architecture at the Grand Palace in Bangkok with more than 100 buildings. The Royal Grand Palace has been the official residence of the kings of Siam. It is the city's biggest tourist attraction and a pilgrimage destination for devout Buddhists. Most of the architecture, royal or sacred, is classified as Ratanakosin - old-Bangkok style. Visitors are allowed to survey the Grand Palace grounds and four of the remaining palace buildings. The current king, Rama X, had his coronation held in the large Amarindra Hall in 2019. Following the ceremony, the king carried on the Budtan Thong royal palanquin from the the hall’s throne room to the Wat Phra Kaew.

At last the shed (on the right in the pic) is finished. As with any job, the work was broken down into individual tasks, each pretty straight forward with the right tools and skills (and a very patient Marybeth) but they seemed to go on forever! The unbearably hot days did slow progress down a bit, but in the end, it came together and even the doors came out just about perfect. The T1-11 siding just would not cooperate and lay flat, we wound up glueing and clamping just about every board in the pattern which was repeated on the inside of the door with 1 inch rough sawn pine boards. When the glue set we added screws and nails to the front and back. The wood accent on their fronts and shutters came from the old shed siding and even the slate used in the ramp has an interesting story! It's quite possible that some Nobel Prize-winning Chemists got their start or performed their studies on that slate. The slate was acquired during the remodeling of the University of Chicago Chemistry laboratory back in the 1980's, I've held on to it all these years and now it's found a second life. One remaining task is to regrow some grass but I'll need a bit of rain to do that and none forecasted until next week! Oh and just in case you're wondering, the colorful used car flags hang over the chicken coop area to ward off the hawks, they actually work!
Hopefully now I'll have some time to catch up a bit! All the best and other than the hot days, I hope your summer is going well!

Alicante is a Spanish coastal city located on the Costa Blanca in the Valencian Community. The city is an important port for the export of central Spain and the region with its beautiful sandy beaches attracts many tourists. In Alicante we can find art, culture, seafood and beautiful beaches. Alicante has a beautiful old town with a beautiful boulevard along the coast Explanada de España and lively terraces. The most beautiful sight is the castle of Santa Barbara on Monte Benacantil a hill of 166 meters high. The history of Alicante dates back to 230 BC, when the city was founded under the name Akra Leuk. After that, the city became part of the Roman Empire and in 711 the Moors occupied the city, who also gave the city its current name 'Alicante'. The Moors also laid the foundation for the fortress on top of the Benacantil hill, but after the conquest by the Spaniards this grew into the castle Castillo de Santa Bárbara.
The old quarter Casco Antiguo – Santa Cruz of the city of Alicante is located below the castle. The district has retained the charm of a seaside village, with its steep, narrow, winding streets, with its white facades, its wrought iron bars and its colorful balconies thanks to the pots full of flowers. Today you can still see part of the walls that served to protect the former city. Being such a fortress, and given its location so close to the sea, the castle of Santa Bárbara made it possible to protect the city effectively while promoting maritime trade, which is why the first houses swirled around it logically, under its guard and guardianship. Locals take great pride in their homes, decorating their balconies and doorsteps with fresh flowers, and painting their shutters in blues and greens. When you need to catch your breath, you can always relax in one of the many cafes and restaurants in this part of the city.

The northern end of the Garden Bridge with the Russian Consulate and the Seagull Hotel at the mouth of Suzhou Creek and some modern buildings on the Pudong side of Huangpu River in the background.
The Russian Consulate is unique within all the other consulates in Shanghai, as it is still in the original building of the former Tsarist Russian Consulate. It has never ever moved to another location despite regime changes in Russia and China and the wars against the Japanese aggression with the bitter fighting along the Suzhou Creek front line.

Shortly after 6 a.m. on the Hintersee - I took a day off and got up with a friend in the middle of the night to photograph the sunrise on the Hintersee - as always a very nice and lonely experience this morning. We were already there at 5 a.m. and around 6 a.m. only one other photographer appeared ... very rarely at this location ...
I have put together 5 high-resolution 18mm portrait format photos to create this panorama photo.

Montenegro is a country in Eastern Europe bordering Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Albania and the Adriatic Sea. It used to be a part of Yugoslavia. The capital is Podgorica. The name Montenegro is Italian and means Black mountain. Montenegro was an independent princedom between 1878 and 1910 and an independent kingdom until 1918. That year Montenegro became part of Yugoslavia. In 2003 Yugoslavia was transformed into the new country of Serbia and Montenegro, but this fell apart in 2006 when both countries went their separate ways. Montenegro is therefore the youngest country in Europe. Montenegro is not a member of the European Union, but it is a member of NATO. Despite the fact that Montenegro is not yet an EU Member State, people do pay with the euro. Montenegro may be small, but this beautiful nation has a huge array of natural and man-made wonders. Once overlooked in favor of more famous Mediterranean countries, Montenegro is quickly gaining a reputation as a great place to travel. It's easy to see why. The mountainous hinterland is home to deep gorges, flowing rivers, glacial lakes and old-growth forests, popular for adventure activities. The winding coast runs along pretty blonde bays overlooking the royal blue Adriatic Sea, ancient Venetian villages and UNESCO-walled towns. Kotor is a fortified town and protected by the St John’s Fortress on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, in a bay near the limestone cliffs of Mt. Lovćen. Characterized by winding streets and squares, its medieval old town has several Romanesque churches, including Kotor Cathedral.
A new funicular has been opened above the Bay of Kotor. It doesn't sound very exciting, but there is one small detail: There are no chairs or gondolas on this cable car, you hang from the cables yourself! Look, that's something different than one of those boring ski lifts! This cable car is called Zip Line Njegusi. The speeds can rise considerably, with a top of 105 km/h. According to the makers, the cable car gives 'the feeling of being an eagle'. Racing across a deep ravine with a panoramic view of Kotor Bay, you'll never notice it when you're in the harness!, just to land on the steep section of road opposite. Then to be driven back to the starting point in less than 3 minutes 'flying'.
....don't forget to zoom in photo!!
Staying with the Lawrence Collection to end the week we have a magnificent view of St. Mary's Abbey and Howth before the bay was filled in. I imagine that most people think that the Abbey is a tavern rather than an ancient place of learning and worship/

Intro - My life motto: killing & action brings me great erection
I never lost my precious time on election
In the youth I had a dream
To become a star in a Major League Baseball
Life path bring me to other direction
And now I am stacked in this crappy doll
I can still play with baseball bat and a ball
I can kick some jerks while listening
Metallica album Kill ‘Em All
I am a ballbreaker
The mean pain maker, I am a soul taker
Hey bitch throw the pitch
Let the fun begin
In this game I would always win
I would never become a movie star
Like Pierce Brosnan in a James Bond
But I can hit my enemies harder
Than a baseball player Barry Bonds
Bloody Baseball bring me so much excitement
I can already see against me new brutal indictment
P.s. Chucky recommend you a classic song Babe Ruth - Mexican.

The morning 7th of February I woke up to see Amsterdam covered in a coat of fresh snow. The snow fell in sudden flurries and gusts and turned the world white and wonderful. With the canals in the city and occasional high winds, there can be a nip in the air, but packing gloves and a scarf should keep you warm enough. There is something very beautiful about Amsterdam in the winter. It snowed for the second time this winter in Amsterdam. Because the temperature was -4 degrees Celsius the snow stayed. The real feel temperature was -11 degrees Celsius cause there was a strong wind and drifting snow. It got more than a few centimeters of snow. The best advice is to stay indoors and turn the stove up a bit. Or of course to go outside to take some nice pictures. The snow is a rare highlight in these February dark days, especially when you have small children. It is quite difficult to come up with something fun in these Covid-19 lock-down days. After a while, sitting indoors becomes quite monotonous for such a toddler. This is a welcome change. The snow also provides a lot of fun for children and adults here in Amsterdam. Snowball fight, make snowmen, go sledding and adults go cross-country skiing. All fun activities that people do in this beautiful snowy world.
Storm Darcy was a storm that hit parts of Western Europe from February 7, 2021. In the Netherlands, Belgium, the east of the United Kingdom and parts of the north and west of Germany, strong winds were accompanied by drifting snow, creating snow dunes. The last heavy snowstorm in Amsterdam dates from 1985. Photo taken in the Haarlemmerstraat next to Coffeeshop Amsterdamned located in Amsterdam’s Jordaan district, – and its extension the Haarlemmerdijk. Normally a lot of activity in this street that focuses on tourism. Now during the Lockdown everything closed with a few lost tourists in the distance. The Haarlemmerstraat is a gem. Offering independent boutiques and special stores, little salons, trendy but affordable restaurants and bars and the oldest cinema in Amsterdam, this area will appeal to even the most jaded of world travelers. You are guaranteed to find a special little something from Amsterdam in this alternative shopping district. The street are packed with boutique shops, cafes, coffee shops and with one little cozy dining and drinking spot after another and other interesting places to visit. The next days it will keep on snowing. Expected more than 17 cm snow in Amsterdam. It's a joy to walk around in my neighborhood.

The snow also provides a lot of fun for children here in centre of Amsterdam. Snowball fight, make snowmen or go sledding. All fun activities that children do in this beautiful snowy world.
Those who think away for a while can imagine themselves in Hendrick Avercamp's world today. As one of the first landscape painters of the 17th-century Dutch school, he specialized in painting the Netherlands in winter. Some 400 years on, our image of life in the harsh winters of the Golden Age is still dominated by Avercamp’s ice scenes with their splendid narrative details of couples skating, children pelting each other with snowballs and unwary individuals falling through the ice. The snow is during the lock-down days an uninhibited winter fun in the streets of Amsterdam. Since the first snow had stuck to the ground, the neighborhood has turned out for a carefree winter entertainment. The next days it will keep on snowing. Expected more than 17 cm snow in Amsterdam. Enjoy a thick layer of snow in your own neighborhood.

Sneeuwballengevecht, sneeuwpoppen maken of sleetje rijden.
I had so much fun with the one can for macro Mondays I figured why stop. Not constrained to the 3" rule I thought I could work with the whole can. Sourcing empty cans was easier than I thought, a quick walk along a back road provided all I needed. It seems that after consuming a can of this stuff, the arm goes into motion mode that inevitably leads to the can winding up on the side of the road.
Each can was shot individually with my Nikon 55mm f/2.8 NIKKOR Micro with about a 6 image focus stack. They do seem to have a lot of potential for art. Three cans, a wavy window and yummy glow colors make this slider complete!

On rare occasions, I post black and white..and dry lands. Yes, I do not live near the sea..sadly.
This is the skyline of Metro Manila. The City of Manila is just one of the 16 cities that formally make up the metro. With 13 million population in a limited space, the metro is very dense and a breeding ground for the virus. And we are on a semi-lockdown again. Just like the picture, things are looking bleak.
I'll post a beach picture next time. Let us focus on things that make us happy 😊

It will be k-k-cold this weekend. The temperature can drop to -15 degrees celcius and that means of course only one thing: skating! After a few nights of good frost we could skate on February 12, 2021 at the Gouwsea. Waterland in the winter is a real skater’s paradise. As temperatures plunge across Europe, many are cursing the cold. But not in the Netherlands. Many are hoping for further frigid conditions. Today my daughter Samantha and friend Casper are joying me skating. A historical moment since crossing the Gouwsea by skates is such a rare occurrence. Today we skate 12km from Uitdam, de Nes to Marken and back, such a beautiful sea of ice to enjoy. An infinitely beautiful sight on this icy sea in 2021. It was a pleasure. The meadows here are white, the Gouwzee completely frozen and the breath comes out of my mouth in small gray puffs. Put your hands behind your back. Breathe calmly. I enjoy the sound of the irons over the ice and the beautiful view of the snowy landscape . The ice surface is great here. Besides ice skating Dutch also love Ice yachting. This is the sport of sailing and racing iceboats and is very popular in the Netherlands. Ice boats are racing at a speed of 100 km an hour over the ice of the Gouwsea. The centre of ice yachting is in Monnickendam.
Today 12th of February 2021 we got the opportunity to go ice skating on real ice instead of going to an ice rink. A good freeze only comes from a win in the climatic lottery. Thus the chance for our Dutch to be wild adventurers on their own land comes only every few years. We glide across solidified, frosted lakes with fish frozen into the ice. The Gouwsea in the winter are a real skater’s paradise. In Monnickendam the ice is only suitable for ice yachting. From here the ice yachtings are crossing the Gouwzee to Marken. We visit Monnickendam. Portrait of my daughter Samantha and friend Casper walking on the vast frozen Gouwsea. From Monnickendam to Marken island is about 4km of disctance. It is not often that the Gouwsea is completely frozen.

Croatia is a country in Southeast Europe. It borders Slovenia to the northwest, Hungary to the northeast, Serbia to the east, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro to the southeast, sharing a maritime border with Italy. Croatia was part of the former Yugoslavia. A population of 4 million, most of whom are Catholics. Zagreb is the capital. Balanced between the Balkans and Central Europe, this country has been passed between rival kingdoms, empires and republics for thousands of years. If there is an advantage to this ongoing disruption, it is in the rich cultural legacy each has left behind. From Venetian palaces, Napoleonic fortresses, Slavic churches, Viennese mansions to socialist sculptures. But most attraction is the coastline with the remarkable clarity of the water and white pebbly beach. Despite being the fastest rising holiday destination in Europe in the past decade, Croatia still doesn't feel overrun by tourists. There are long sandy and winding beaches too, perfect for lazy days. Croatia is a beautiful country to discover many different landscapes. Dubrovnik is according to many one of the most beautiful cities on the Adriatic coast. This city in Croatia is also called the Pearl of the Adriatic. The historic center, or rather the completely walled fortress city of Dubrovnik, is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage. This part is still in a remarkably good condition. A wonderful place to discover on foot, it is a city with a diverse, but also rough past. Remarkably, the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, as well as the various monasteries, palaces and fountains have been preserved. They all tell their own story from the Middle Ages.
Dubrovnik is a city on the Adriatic Sea in southern Croatia. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean Sea. The history of the city probably dates back to the 7th century. The old, completely walled fortress town from the thirteenth century is located at the foot of the mountain Srđ. From the immense city walls and towers you can look out over the city and the sea. Porporela is pier and breakwater in Dubrovnik’s Old Harbour originally built in the old times to reduce the intensity of waves, reduce erosion and protect boats and ships anchored in Dubrovnik’s harbour. It is very popular Dubrovnik sight to stroll to when walking around the Old Town. Overlooking the Old Town of Dubrovnik. In the distance there is a 16th century wooden "Pirate" Ship a traditional Karaka replica. You can book a sunset cruise from the harbour in Dubrovnik.
Can you see the Little Egret up there in the willow tree ? The banks of the stream are so dense with vegetation I didn't see him (or her) until he flew up from the opposite bank. This is another one taken with my iPhone 11 while out on a morning walk with Marnie very recently.

Thanks for looking - and I hope the weather is nicer for you than it is for us here in the UK - rain, wind, flooding happening right now.
I hope you like this, anyway. Thanks for every view, comment, fave. All is appreciated very much.
Thank you in advance for all your faves and comments. I might answer several days later. And I might post other photos in the meantime.
